The Institute for Transnational Arbitration (ITA) provides advanced, continuing education for lawyers, judges and other professionals concerned with transnational arbitration of commercial and investment disputes. Through its programs, scholarly publications and membership activities, ITA has become an important global forum on contemporary issues in the field of transnational arbitration.  The Institute’s record of educational achievements has been aided by the support of many of the world’s leading companies, lawyers and arbitration professionals.  Membership in the Institute for Transnational Arbitration is available to corporations, law firms, professional and educational organizations, government agencies and individuals

Founded in 1986 as a division of The Center for American and International Law, the Institute for Transnational Arbitration (ITA) was created to promote global adherence to the world's principal arbitration treaties and to educate business executives, government officials and lawyers about arbitration as a means of resolving transnational business disputes.

Since then, through its educational programs, scholarly publications, and membership activities – including the volunteer leadership and support of many outstanding attorneys, law firms and companies – the ITA has become an important international forum in the field of transnational arbitration.

The Annual ITA-ASIL Conference
In 1996, ten years after the creation of the ITA, the Advisory Board announced the formation of an Academic Council (AC) “to serve as a link between ITA and some of the most respected law school professors who teach in the field.”  The ITA attracts well known academics and greatly benefits from the involvement of those who teach and write in the field of arbitration.

7th Annual ITA-ASIL Conference:
Arbitration: The End of the Golden Age?

Rutledge (Associate Professor of Law, University of Georgia Law School, Athens)and Edna Sussman (Arbitrator & Mediator, SussmanADR LLC, Scarsdale) at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Washington, D.C.

The Annual Workshop
The ITA's annual Workshop addresses current issues of practice, procedure and policy in transnational commercial arbitration. The Workshop is presented each June in Dallas and attracts participants from over 34 countries and 14 U.S. states. The program customarily includes several mock arbitration scenes interspersed with expert commentaries, in this manner both explaining and demonstrating the issues addressed. The mock proceedings and commentaries are written, performed and presented by an international faculty of experts that includes many of the foremost arbitrators and arbitration practitioners in the world.

21st Annual ITA Workshop:
Commencing an International Commercial Arbitration

The 21st Annual ITA Workshop will be held on June 17, 2010 under the leadership of co-chairs Prof. Christopher Gibson (Suffolk University Law School, Boston), Jean E. Kalicki (Arnold & Porter, Washington, D.C.) and Klaus Reichert (Bar Council of Ireland, Dublin) at The Adolphus Hotel in Dallas, Texas.

The ITA Forum
On the morning following the Workshop, the ITA hosts its invitation-only Friday morning Forum, an informal roundtable discussion on current transnational arbitration issues. The Forum is open to Advisory Board members and Workshop faculty.

A special event, the Forum provides the opportunity for members of the ITA Advisory Board to share their considerable experience in transnational arbitration in an informal environment on emerging and important issues of the day. The agenda for this open discussion is determined by the participants.

The work of the ITA is done primarily through its Advisory Board, its Executive Committee and the Academic Council.

Advisory Board
The Advisory Board is comprised of representatives designated by ITA Members. Depending on the level of membership, ITA members may designate multiple representatives on the Institute’s Advisory Board, each of whom is invited to attend, without charge, the annual ITA Workshop, the annual ITA Advisory Board Dinner Meeting later that evening and the ITA Forum (the following morning) - an informal, invitation-only roundtable discussion on current issues in the field.

The ITA Advisory Board meets each June over dinner following the annual Workshop, and is invited to attend the ITA Friday morning Forum, an informal, invitation-only roundtable discussion on the morning after the Workshop. The 2010 Annual Meeting of the Advisory Board will be held June 17, 2010.

The Executive Committee of the Advisory Board meets twice a year.

Academic Council
The ITA Academic Council is an advisory body comprised of international arbitration law professors and scholars. The Academic Council supports the work of ITA through its members' participation in ITA programs and publications, including development of the ITA educational video series, the presentations at the annual ITA-ASIL Conferences are published by Oxford University Press and contributions to the Kluwer Arbitration Blog.
