About YEP

The Young Energy Professionals (YEP) Committee is the newest committee of the Institute for Energy Law’s Advisory Board. The YEP mission is to offer its members a forum for discussion of contemporary issues, information for career development, and an opportunity to network with each other and with energy industry leaders.

Now in its fifth year, the YEPs have an established record of providing quality programs and events to members. Consistent with the needs of its membership, the YEPs focus on providing opportunities for career advancement, long-term relationships within the energy industry, and a forum to explore current issues in the energy industry through:

  1. Programs for career and professional development;
  2. Education in oil and gas "basics"; and
  3. Networking with other YEPs and young professionals, as well as with more senior members of the Institute for Energy Law and other industry leaders.

Rocks, Dollars and Deals - The "Netherland Sewell School"
Comes to Houston

May 3, 2012

Whether you are in land, finance, business development, or legal, this seminar has something for you. Co-sponsored by The Institute for Energy Law's Young Energy Professionals Committee and the AIPN's Young Negotiators, but open to all ages, the event will be held in Houston and will last one day, to be followed by a networking reception.

Each year, Netherland, Sewell & Associates, Inc. (NSAI) conducts highly-regarded Oil & Gas Property Evaluation Seminars for non-technical professionals in Dallas, Texas and London, England. For the first time, this renowned seminar will be offered in Houston and will be focused on helping lawyers, negotiators and other dealmakers understand the basics of reserve evaluation, how these evaluations are used to price projects, and how both of these are reflected in the terms of transactions.

Topics Include:

  • Understanding the process for determining what is in the ground (including primers on basic reservoir properties, geology, petrophysics, seismic and other data, reserve calculation, probabilistic reserves, and reserve simulation),
  • Project and economic modeling (including cost assumptions and examples, product pricing and market- and country-specific effects), and
  • Discussing transaction terms with respected negotiators.

We look forward to seeing you at the event.

4th Annual YEP General Counsel Forum
December 1, 2011
Alden Hotel
Houston, Texas

This popular evening event, now in its fourth year, is of great interest to in-house counsel who want to hear more about the careers of some of the most senior lawyers in industry, and to attorneys in private practice who want to improve their ability to address the needs of their clients as effectively as possible. The evening will begin with a reception, followed by a panel discussion, after which each General Counsel will join a smaller group of young attorneys for dinner and a more intimate conversation.

The YEP Committee gratefully acknowledge our event sponsors

IEL's Young Energy Professionals and AIPN Young Negotiators Breakfast Speaker Series: "Farmouts and Other Entry Points"

On June 15, the YEP Committee held another of its joint breakfasts with AIPN Young Negotiators at which Marie Wagner, Senior Counsel with Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, discussed farmouts, letters of intent, joint study and bidding agreements, and related topics.  The event was one of the most successful breakfasts, with over sixty total registrants, an excellent presentation, and informative materials.  Many thanks to Marie for agreeing to talk to our young professionals and making the drive down from the Woodlands and to our sponsors, Tim West and Vinson & Elkins for hosting us and providing breakfast.
